Latest News on the Migrant Crisis in the UK

EU wants to make a deal with the UK.

EU ministers are calling for a deal with the UK to tackle the migrant crisis in the United Kingdom. Recently, 27 people have died in a small boat trying to cross the channel to come to the UK.

The ministers are calling for a new agreement on Sunday to solve the issue of migrants trying to cross the Channel to England from France on small boats during dangerous and life-threatening journeys.

Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister said that European authorities would work towards an “even more intense” battle against people smugglers, organising boat crossings for migrants across the channel. 13,210 people in the UK were granted protection via asylum or resettlement rules. That is lower than in March 2020.

Ministers responsible for immigration from France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany met on Sunday afternoon to discuss ways to end small boat crossings. He said: “If immigrants come here to Calais … and risk their lives to cross the Channel, it is because they are attracted to England, especially by the labour market”.

64% is the proportion of initial asylum applications were submitted in the year ending September 2021.

The Figures

83,733 people are waiting for an initial decision for their asylum application at the end of September 2021. Delays in the asylum system have rapidly risen since 2018, 41% higher than a year ago. The waiting for the outcome of asylum cases in the UK is predicted to be higher than in previous years. Individuals should claim asylum as soon as possible, preferably as soon as they arrive on the UK border. If you would like to read more about the process of claiming asylum, click here.
