Passing your driving test is a very exciting occurrence for any individual, however, there are laws are rules put in place to keep new drivers and other drivers safe on the roads. Meaning that new drivers face stricter restrictions. Usually, drivers must accumulate 12 points before getting their licence taken away, however, new drivers can only collect 6 points before getting their licence revoked. In 2019, over 11,000 new drivers got their licence revoked for a range of reasons, but the main reason being, holding the wrong or no insurance policy as said in the Auto Express Article.

Rules for new drivers: what if I get points on my licence before passing my test?

If you get points on your licence before passing your test, you can still pass your driving test. If you get more than 6 points on your licence before passing your test as a provisional driver, you can still pass your test, however, if you get any more points after passing you will get your licence revoked. If you get less than 6 points on your licence before passing your test, you can still pass your test however, if you get more points during your probationary period and they accumulate to 6, you will get your licence revoked.

What happens if I get my licence revoked?

If you get your licence revoked, you must re-apply for a provisional licence, and pass your theory and driving test or any tests required for your vehicle. As soon as you get 6 points on your licence, an automatic notification will be sent to the DVSA, and the licence is automatically revoked, therefore making it extremely difficult to fight your case. You will receive a letter explaining why your licence is revoked and any necessary steps to take afterwards. Therefore, it is extremely important to be wary in the first 2 years of driving. Everyone has the right to appeal a case, however, you are then risking getting a higher fine and more points on your licence.
