Burn Injury Claim

What is a burn injury claim?

Burn Injury Claims

A burn injury is a very painful and traumatic event which causes damage to a person’s skin. It can have a physical and mental impact on health. There are many factors which could cause a burn injury such as:

  • A fire
  • Electrical currents
  • Radiation
  • Strong acids
  • Hot liquids
  • Sunlight

And many more… Incidents like these can happen anywhere, they could occur at work, home, or even outside when you are trying to relax in the sun.

There are 4 different types of burn injury

First-degree burn

This type of a burn only affects the first layer of skin which is the epidermis, it will usually heal within 5-7 days, and will not leave any scarring.

Second-degree burn

A second-degree burn causes damage to the first layer of skin (epidermis) and a part of the second layer of skin (dermis). The burn will take up to 3 weeks to heal, they are also more likely to leave a scar, however it should fade with time.

Third-degree burn

The third-degree burn is a more serious burn. This is because it causes damage to the first and the second layer of skin(epidermis and dermis). The third-degree burn is a serious injury and requires immediate medical intervention, as the wound will need to be cleaned and will need a surgical procedure such as skin grafting. After the surgery the area will take up to 18 months to fully heal.

Fourth-degree burn

Fourth degree burns are the most dangerous burns a person could experience. They will have an impact on both of the layers of skin and the tissue under the skin which includes muscles and bones. This type of a burn could be fatal and will need immediate medical help as it will require grafting or even amputation.

Impacts due to a burn injury

Serious burns will mostly cause impact on the persons physical ability, mentality and could cause financial problems due to outside affecters such as being off work. Serious burns could cause major pain, which could lead to carrying out daily activities much harder, even taking a simple shower could become a challenge for the injured person. To regain full ability the doctor will advise the injured person to perform different exercises, massages and wearing pressure garnets, which could also be very painful. Once the affected area has formed into a scar the person might find it much harder to move/bend the affected area, which could sometimes cause pain to the persons bones, this would happen due to the skin being much thicker than the natural skin. Not being able to carry out daily activities could have a negative impact on the persons mental health. They may feel like no one can understand them and what they have gone through, therefor they might not want to speak about what they’ve experienced and keep all of their emotions inside, this could lead to them feeling unhappy and could result in depression.

Another medical condition that could occur after such a serious injury is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Another medical condition that could occur after such a serious injury is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This condition could cause the individual to experience flashbacks of the event, nightmares and sometimes even panic attacks. Due to the long healing process the person may not be able to work for a very long time, which could lead to the loss of earnings or sometimes even the loss of a job. This could have a massive impact on the persons life, it could lead to the person becoming more stressed and cause more mental health problems.

Gathering evidence

To prove that you have been involved in an accident that caused a burn injury and it wasn’t your fault, you need to make sure that you gather as much evidence as you can. The evidence could include pictures, witness reports, medical records and CCTV footage.

How much compensation can I claim for a burns injury?

The amount of compensation you could claim for a burn injury all depends on several different factors.

  • Circumstances of the event will have a big impact on the amount of compensation you could claim.
  • Another thing that could have an impact on the amount of money you receive, is how severe your injury is. The more serious your injuries are, the more money you will get. Also if you have to undergone a surgery due to the injury, you will possibly be able to receive a higher compensation.
  • Whether the injury occurred to an accident or whether it was intentional due to negligence.
  • If the event has had an impact on your mental health
